For the young, talented fashion designer Antonia Winston, the sky seems to be full of violins. But then she discovers that her fiancé Peter is cheating on her. Disappointed and deeply hurt, Antonia burns all bridges in London and travels to her parents in Cornwall. She is followed there by the charming lawyer David Scott, who is commissioned by Peter to try to smooth things over and persuade Antonia to return to London. Meanwhile, the traditional Winston drapery mill, owned by Antonia's parents Helen and George, is facing hard times. They have still kept the difficulties a secret from Antonia. But when the Winstons' biggest buyer of cloth withdraws a major order, George suffers a heart attack and has to be admitted to hospital.
